Abraham Dreifuss

The first stumbling stone in Eichstetten was laid – organized by the Freiburg STOLPERSTEIN Initiative after consultation with Gunter Demnig – on the initiative of Ursula Kügele on April 25, 2003 for ABRAHAM DREIFUSS. He had worked as an apprentice in her family’s company in Eichstetten.

ABRAHAM DREIFUSS was born on May 15, 1865 and was married to Johanna Dreifuss, née Alexander. She was born May 9, 1870, and died June 2, 1924. The couple had two children: daughter Lilly and son Max. ABRAHAM DREIFUSS was a merchant and trader by profession.

Together with other men of Jewish faith from Eichstetten and Freiburg, ABRAHAM DREIFUSS and his son Max Dreifuss were arrested after the Reich Pogrom Night in 1938 and deported to the Dachau concentration camp. As Ursula Kügele reported, ABRAHAM DREIFUSS was tortured in Dachau concentration camp in front of his son Max with the words: „Now we will show you how to deal with Jews“. ABRAHAM DREIFUSS did not survive this ordeal and was brutally murdered in the Dachau concentration camp on November 22, 1938. Ursula Kügele went on to tell that his family had to pay 1,000 Reichsmarks for the transfer of the body.

His son Max Dreifuss returned from the concentration camp on November 20, 1938 and fled Nazi Germany to the USA. But he could still, as an old man shortly before his death, hear and see by eMail that a memorial service took place for his father in front of the family house in Eichstetten in the presence of the mayor on the occasion of the STOLPERSTEIN laying.
