Isaak Judas

ISAAK JUDAS was born on February 14, 1887 as the son of an old Ihringen family. His father, who died in Ihringen in 1916, was called Joseph Judas. He was married for the second time to BERTHA JUDAS GEB. HEILBRONN (also from Heilbronn).

On October 22, 1940, during the large deportation of citizens of Jewish faith from southwest Germany, BERTHA JUDAS was deported to the Gurs concentration camp and died just two months later from the horrific living conditions there. ISAAK JUDAS had eleven siblings. Six of his siblings fled to other countries in time to escape the Nazis in Germany and thus survived. The siblings who remained in Germany were murdered by the Nazis, like their brother ISAAK JUDAS. ISAAK JUDAS was married to SELMA JUDAS GEB.STENGEL. The couple had two daughters, Gisela Margareta Judas (*April 12, 1921), called Gretel (also Grethel), and Ingeborg Judas (*August 8, 1925), married Froehlich.
As a horse and cattle dealer, ISAAK JUDAS lived on the second floor of Salzstrasse 20 in Freiburg, where his shop was also located. The JUDAS couple must have suspected what was in store for them, because they did everything they could to save their daughters from the German Nazis. They managed to get Gretel and Inge Judas out of Germany to the USA on so-called Kindertransports. Gretel died on December 10, 2009 and Inge on May 4, 2006 in New York.
On October 22, 1940, the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, ISAAK JUDAS, SELMA JUDAS and BERTHA JUDAS were arrested at Adolf-Hitler-Strasse 85 (today Habsburger Strasse 85) and deported to Gurs. This address was BERTHA JUDAS’s apartment. ISAAK JUDAS was also registered at this address from 1939 to 1940. Other sources give Sandstrasse 20 as the couple’s place of residence. The terrible living conditions in this camp Gurs, one of more than 500 German camps in France, were mainly due to hunger, cold, rats and lice and the extremely unhygienic conditions. ERICH JOSEPH FORST, a nephew of ISAAK JUDAS, tried to free nine of his family members from the camp with the help of the Resistance. Together with seven other family members, they lived hidden on a farm for a good seven months. This is how Kurt Judas, who was among those rescued as a small boy, reported it. But then they were discovered, or betrayed, arrested and brought back to the camp. On August 24, 1942, ISAAK JUDAS was taken from Gurs to the Drancy concentration camp. From there he was deported on August 26, 1942 with convoy no. 24 to the Auschwitz concentration camp. ISAAK JUDAS was murdered in the gas chambers of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp at the age of 55.

Among other STUMBLING BLOCKS, his stone was financed by his niece by marriage, Inge Kaufmann. Her husband, Hans Judas, who called himself Hans Kaufmann, had fled from Germany to Switzerland, where he had to do hard labor in labor camps, but survived the Nazi terror.

On 22 October 1940, during the great deportation of citizens of the Jewish religion from south-western Germany, BERTHA JUDAS was deported to the Gurs concentration camp and died only two months later from the horrible living conditions there. ISAAC JUDAS had eleven siblings. Six of his siblings fled from the National Socialists in Germany to other countries in time and thus survived. The siblings who remained in Germany were murdered by the Nazis, just like their brother ISAAK JUDAS. ISAAK JUDAS was married to SELMA JUDAS Geb.Stengel. The couple had two daughters, Gisela Margareta Judas (*12 April 1921), called Gretel (also Grethel) and Ingeborg Judas (*8 August 1925) married Froehlich. The terrible living conditions in this Gurs camp, one of more than 500 German camps in France, came mainly from hunger, cold, rats and ice, and the absolutely unhygienic conditions. Thus ERICH JOSEPH FORST, a nephew of ISAAK JUDAS, tried to free nine of his family members from the camp with the help of the Resistance.
