Julius Friedberg

JULIUS FRIEDBERG was born on April 23, 1875 in Bruchsal. He was a pharmacist and he owned the Herdern pharmacy in the Freiburg district of the same name at Zähringerstrasse 37, on the corner of Zähringerstrasse (Habsburgerstrasse) and Burgunderstrasse. He had to “forcibly sell” this pharmacy to August Tenckhoff on October 1, 1936.

He was married to the teacher GERTRUD FRIEDBERG née KAUFMANN. Their daughter HANNA FRIEDBERG was born in 1914 and was able to survive the Holocaust because she emigrated to Palestine in 1933. He was later divorced from his wife GERTRUD FRIEDBERG.

JULIUS FRIEDBERG was arrested in Freiburg in 1938 in connection with Kristallnacht and deported to the Dachau concentration camp on November 11, 1938. He had 10.55 Reichsmarks with him. He was registered in Dachau under prisoner number 20930. On December 24, 1938, he was murdered in the Dachau concentration camp at the age of 63. His testamentary request from 1936 to place his personal belongings under his gravestone was fulfilled by his long-time pharmacy employee, Mrs. Barth.

JULIUS FRIEDBERG last lived in Freiburg at Friedrichstrasse 53 (now 47), where a STOLPERSTEIN was laid for him in July 2003 in the presence of Mayor Ulrich von Kirchbach.
