Melanie Bloch geb. Guggenheim
MELANIE BLOCH was born on October 2, 1866 as MELANIE GUGGENHEIM in Tiengen. She married SIMON BLOCH from Eichstetten, with whom she had two children: Emilie (*December 26, 1894) and Gertrud. The family lived in Freiburg on the second floor of Belfortstrasse 26. In the rear of the building, SIMON BLOCH ran a hardware store and a real estate agency.
The research into the fate of the Blochs was initiated in response to a request from a Freiburg resident. He asked to find out what had become of the Bloch couple, whom he had known as children. He remembered that he – born in 1933 – and his parents took the couple to the train when they were to be deported. Neither of them knew where they were being taken and cried „the whole time“. They then got into train carriages in which the individual compartments were not connected to each other. This farewell must have taken place on October 22, 1940, because MELANIE and SIMON BLOCH were deported to Gurs on that day. They remained in this camp as prisoners until November 25, 1941. They were then helped to escape to Dun-sur-Meuse. They were hidden there until the end of the war. The couple was able to stay in this place until 1947. Then SIMON BLOCH died at the age of 83, and his wife MELANIE BLOCH returned to Germany alone.
She lived in a Jewish retirement home in Frankfurt from 1947 until her death on August 9, 1953. MELANIE BLOCH was 87 years old. The man who last saw the two as a young boy says today: „If we had known what was happening to the Blochs, we would definitely have hidden them.“

The research about the fate of the Blochs goes back to the request of a Freiburg citizen. He asked to find out what became of the Bloch couple, whom he knew as a child. He recalled that he – born in 1933 – and his parents took the couple to the train when they were to be deported. Both of them, he said, did not know where they would be taken and cried a lot „the whole time.“ They then boarded train cars in which the individual compartments were not connected.
